e competition was founded nearly four decades ago by Mort
Luby Jr. to encourage bowling proprietors to reinvest in their facili-
ties and reward creativity in both modernized centers and new
builds. It evolved over the years to include separate divisions for
U.S. and international centers.
e 39th Design Awards recognize projects that were com-
pleted during calendar year 2023. It attracted 82 entries — 46 U.S.
and 36 international — representing a total of 15 countries. To
underscore the quality of the entries, the pictures shown on this
page are of non-winners… as hard as it may be to believe.
Heading the judging panel was James Nowak, architect, AIA,
LEED AP (retired). Nowak was a senior technical architect for 50
years, leading an array of U.S. and international projects, including
the Acropolis building, a high-rise, multi-use facility in Santo
Domingo, Dominican Republic.
