PAST AND PRESENT NFL GREATS GO BOWLING FOR KIDS AT THIRD ANNUAL SUPER BOWL CELEBRITY BOWLING CLASSIC
Super Bowl Legend Lynn Swann Named Event Spokesperson; Proceeds to Benefit the NFL's Youth Education Town (YET) Initiative
PHOENIX, AZ, January 3, 2008 - More than 40 NFL legends will join bowlers from the greater Phoenix area and across the country at the third annual Super Bowl NFL Charities/Strike Ten Celebrity Bowling Classic.
The event is open to amateur bowlers and will be held at 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 31 at AMF Christown Lanes in Phoenix, host city to Super Bowl XLII. Every team will bowl three games in the tournament-each with a different celebrity captain-which will be scored using a special handicap system.
Hall of Famer and former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and television broadcaster Lynn Swann will act as the event spokesperson and will lead the field of celebrities, which already includes more than 20 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
"For three years straight, the Super Bowl Celebrity Bowling Classic has been one of the premier charitable events at the Super Bowl and a great opportunity for fans to mix and mingle with some of the all-time greats," said Swann. "In addition to being a fun and lively event, the tournament plays a very important role in helping fund the NFL’s Youth Education Town initiative to help kids in at-risk neighborhoods."
Proceeds from the Bowling Classic will benefit the Youth Education Town (YET) initiative in Phoenix, part of the NFL's commitment to make a positive impact in the host city of each Super Bowl. The NFL donates more than $1 million annually toward the project. YET Centers offer youngsters family counseling, career planning, computer training and opportunities aimed at improving their study skills and learning abilities, as well as sports and recreational facilities.
Prior to the Bowling Classic, current NFL stars will headline a private bowling clinic for boys and girls from the Phoenix YET Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30. AMF Christown Lanes will host the event, which is open to the media. Professional bowlers will teach kids the basics of bowling, and after, they will be joined by the NFL players in open bowling.
Pro Football Hall of Famers already confirmed to participate in the Bowling Classic include: Dick Butkus, Willie Lanier, Carl Eller, Ted Hendricks, Jimmy Taylor, Harry Carson, Leroy Kelly, Bobby Mitchell, Jan Stenerud, Lem Barney, Larry Little, Elvin Bethea, Bobby Bell, Rayfield Wright, Paul Krause, Jim Langer, Tom Mack, Ron Mix, Bob St. Clair, Charley Taylor, Paul Warfield, Roger Wehrli, Dave Wilcox and Kellen Winslow.
