Four Coaching Trailblazers Round Out Class Of 2009

ARLINGTON TEXAS - Internationally acclaimed author and world-class bowling instructor Tom Kouros has been selected as the 2009 inductee into the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame, recognizing superior coaching contributions to the sport.  The Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame committee, comprised of chairman Jimmy Sturm, BPAA president, Dave Garber - USBC co-director of coaching; Susie Minshew - IBPSIA past-president; Bob Rea - bowling coach/consultant (Bob Rea & Associates); Kelly Bednar - director, STE Skills Center; and bowling writers Dick Evans and Jim Goodwin selected Mr. Kouros after reviewing numerous nominations and dozens of supporting documents and spending hours in discussion prior to their vote.  The formal induction will take place Wednesday morning, June 22, 2009 during International Bowl Expo’s General Session at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
   
Mr. Kouros has reached more in print than anyone through his very successful Par Bowling books, but has also traveled worldwide teaching the sport.  He also started the first college accredited school for bowling, IPBI.  He has also authored the Par Bowling column in Bowlers Journal International magazine for over 20 years.
   
The 82 year-old Kouros began his bowling career as a pinboy in his native Chicago, quickly maturing into an accomplished competitor, proprietor, instructor and writer.  He has personally coached some of bowling’s top stars and his two books, Par Bowling and Par Bowling: The Challenge are international best sellers.  He has been a contributing writer for Bowlers Journal International for over 30 years, penning the popular monthly, Par Bowling column.  He founded the Institute of Professional Bowling Instruction in Chicago and is founder and past president of the Mid-America Bowling Writers.  He is a member of the USBC Hall of Fame, and was awarded the Bowling Writers Association of America Rip Van Winkle Award, Flowers for the Living Award and World Bowling Writers Lifetime Coaching Achievement Award.
   
Prior to Mr. Kouros’ induction, four Trailblazers, also selected by the Hall of Fame committee, will be recognized as coaching visionaries who laid the foundation for all who followed.  The list includes:

Helen Duval - Traveled extensively teaching and conducting clinics, and raising money for hospitalized veterans.

Don Johnson - Spent the last 20 years of his life as a very respected instructor giving private lessons and small classes in Las Vegas.  He refined his skills as a lead instructor in the Professional Bowlers camps attended by thousands.

Paul Krumske - Employed by Peter Hand Brewery as the, “Sports Director,” he was also on the Brunswick Advisory Staff.  He conducted many lessons on TV and radio and was known as the “Bowling Professor.”

Bill Taylor - Author of several pro shop and instruction books, he studied the pros extensively and gave private lessons and seminars.  A crusader for integrity and credibility in the sport.

About the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame
The Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame was established by the STE Skills Center, a division of Strike Ten Entertainment (STE), in 2008 and will have a presence in the new International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame located at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington, Texas.
