BOWLING INDUSTRY ANNOUNCES 2009 SERVICES AWARD WINNERS

Rex Haney To Receive Victor Lerner Memorial Medal and Induction Into BPAA Hall Of Fame

ARLINGTON Texas - The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA) announced its list of 2009 Bowling Industry Service Award winners during their mid-winter summit at the Meritage Resort in Napa CA, January 20.

Rex Haney has been selected to receive the Victor Lerner Memorial Medal for a lifetime of service to the bowling industry. The medal is the highest honor in the bowling business and represents Mr. Haney’s induction into the BPAA Hall of Fame located at International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum relocating to the International Bowling Campus in Arlington, TX.

The Victor Lerner Memorial Medal is named after the past BPAA president who served as head of the association from 1966-1968

Mr. Haney is being cited not only for his service, but also for helping lead the BPAA into the new century. Haney’s leadership to BPAA occurred on all levels including, but not limited to, BPAA president 1998-2000 and interim CEO in late 1999-2000 during BPAA’s CEO search, member of the board of directors, committee work and serving the Kansas State BPA.

The 2009 President’s Medal will be awarded to Larry Moyes for his leadership role in establishing the International Bowl Expo (IBE) as the bowling industry’s premier event in addition to all his years of service to BPAA’s convention committee prior to creation of IBE.

The President’s Medal is given annually to an individual, either proprietor or manager, judged to have given exceptional support and/or made significant contributions to the association.

The V.A. Wapensky Award for Industry Service has been awarded posthumously to Mike Hennessey for his years of volunteer service to the bowling industry on local, state and national levels. A well-respected bowling writer, Mr. Hennessey’s skills went beyond the written word as he worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between bowling proprietors and bowling associations. He was past president of the Bowling Writer’s Association of America and founder of the Ohio Bowling Hall of Fame.

Mike Aulby will receive the 2009 BPAA Dick Weber Bowling Ambassador Award for his contributions to the game and sport of bowling.

Created in 2005, the Dick Weber Bowling Ambassador Award is named in memory of the hall of fame professional bowler who was a global ambassador for the sport and spent a lifetime setting the standard for all bowling athletes by elevating the positive image of bowling and promoting the game and sport to all ages both on and off the lanes. The award is presented by the BPAA to a bowling athlete, male or female, who has consistently shown grace both on and off the lanes by promoting the sport and game of bowling in a positive manner.

The 2009 Special Projects Award will go to Hank Harris recognizing his efforts and contributions to the International Bowling Campus project.

The BPAA Media Award will be presented to Kent Lowe, writer for the Baton Rouge Advocate. Covering the sport of bowling for nearly three decades, Lowe is being cited for his thorough coverage of the 2008 Qubica/AMF International Family Tournament, held in Baton Rouge, LA.

The Media Award is presented to a local, national and/or non-bowling industry media representative who, through either print or electronic media, made significant contributions to furthering the sport and business of bowling.

The awards will be presented during the annual International Bowl Expo convention and trade show at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, June 21-25.
