Each Winner Awarded $15,000 Scholarships
Arlington, Texas - Erin McCarthy, Omaho, Neb. and Kevin Tatrow, Bel Aire, Kan. survived a hectic two days to triumph over all other bowlers in their respective male and female divisions to become the champions of the third-annual North Pointe Insurance $100,000 High School Open Singles (Bowling) Championship (NPI $100,000 HSOSC) held at 5 Star Lanes in Sterling Heights, Mich., according the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA).
McCarthy and Tatrow each won $15,000 in scholarship awards. The field of competitors included 174 graduating senior boys and 89 graduating senior girls encompassing all-staters, Junior Gold bowlers, Junior Team USA team members as well as members of the USBC/Denny’s All-American High School Championship participants.
In the Girls division, Erin McCarthy, the tournaments number one seed going into the top 16 bracket, defeated Stephanie Melton, Louisville, Ky., 169-156, then prevailed over the 2008 Junior Gold Girl’s champion Kristie Petravich, West Palm Beach, Fla., 230-181 before winning the top scholarship over Brittini Hamilton, Webster, N.Y., 219-157. Ms. Hamilton was awarded the runner-up scholarship of $7,500.
In the Boys division, Kevin Tatrow moved from the # 14 seed position to defeat the 2008 Boy’s Junior Gold champion Geoffrey Young, Denton, Tex., 226-192 in Round 4 before taking the title against Tyler Herrman, Harrisburg, Pa., 215-203. Tatrow began his championship trek by bowling a near-perfect 296 in his round 1 game. Herrman took home a $7,500 scholarship award for his second-place finish.
To be eligible, each bowler had to be registered with the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) as a certified youth member; the bowler had to be a graduated senior in the academic 2007-2008 year; and bowlers must have maintained a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (based on a 4.0 GPA scale) as determined by the high school from which they graduated.

Plans are already underway for the 2009 North Pointe Insurance $100,000 High School Open Singles Championships which is scheduled to be held in Indianapolis, Ind. More details to follow.
